Nusantara Lifestyle creates bespoke furniture, joinery and statement pieces from reclaimed teak, working with architects, designers, hospitality groups and private clients around the world. Each piece is developed with a focus on material integrity, skilled Indonesian craftsmanship and the unique character of timber that has already lived a previous life. Through ORIGIN, our material traceability platform, we document where our reclaimed teak comes from and the journey it takes from recovered structure to finished piece. The result is enduring contemporary furniture with a clear provenance, a strong sense of place and a more responsible approach to how natural materials are sourced, used and valued.

Nusantara Lifestyle works primarily with reclaimed teak sourced from existing structures across the Indonesian archipelago. Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most important forest ecosystems, making responsible material choices particularly significant. By recovering and reusing existing timber, we aim to demonstrate the value already held within these materials and the potential to create exceptional contemporary furniture without continually extracting new resources.

Through ORIGIN, our material traceability platform, we document the provenance of our reclaimed teak and follow its journey from source structure through recovery, selection and production. This transparency gives architects, designers and clients a clearer understanding of the materials specified within their projects, while connecting each finished piece to its previous life and place of origin.

Reclaimed teak is a material already proven by time. Having spent decades – and in some cases far longer – as part of houses, structures and other built environments, the timber we recover has already demonstrated exceptional strength, stability and resilience. Reworked into furniture, it becomes a material designed not simply to endure, but to continue its life for generations.

Teak is naturally one of the world’s most durable hardwoods. Its density and strength make it highly resistant to impact and movement, while naturally occurring oils, tannins and resins help protect the timber from moisture, decay, warping and cracking. These qualities make reclaimed teak particularly well suited to furniture and architectural applications where longevity and material performance are as important as appearance.

Across Southeast Asia, teak has been valued for centuries in architecture, shipbuilding, furniture and carving. Nusantara Lifestyle builds on that long material history, transforming reclaimed teak into contemporary pieces that retain the strength and character of their previous life. Furniture
with stories

If our furniture could talk, it would tell stories of places, people and generations. Reclaimed teak carries traces of the structures it once formed, the
communities that lived around it and the craftsmanship that shaped it. Rather than erasing that history, we see it as part of the material’s value – something to preserve, reinterpret and carry forward through contemporary design.

Much of the reclaimed teak we work with comes from dismantled joglo, traditional Javanese structures recognised by their distinctive tiered roofs and substantial timber construction. Their principal columns, known as saka guru, together with beams and roof elements, were often crafted from teak and sometimes richly carved with floral, geometric and symbolic motifs. Once these structures reach the end of their original life, their timber can be carefully recovered and transformed into furniture, joinery and architectural pieces with an entirely new purpose.

Through ORIGIN, our material traceability platform, we document these sources and share the journey of the timber from its previous structure through recovery, selection and production. In this way, each Nusantara Lifestyle piece carries more than material provenance: it retains a connection to the place and craftsmanship from which it came, creating a bridge between Indonesian heritage, responsible material use and contemporary design.
